KAMPALA, April 7, 2025 — The Uganda Police Force [UPF] has commenced the construction of at least 1,200 housing units at its headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.
The Inspector General of Police [IGP], Abas Byakagaba, officially flagged off the construction of the modern apartments last week, urging the Force’s Directorate of Logistics and Engineering to deliver quality work within the set timeframe.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Byakagaba stated that the new housing units would significantly improve the welfare of police officers and their families.
“This initiative is a significant step towards improving the welfare of police officers and their families. Together with the police’s senior leadership, we are committed to enhancing the overall well-being of the police force,” Byakagaba added.
The launch of the consatruction project was attended by senior police officers, including Assistant Inspector General of Police [AIGP] Dr Hadijah Namutebi, Director of Welfare and Production.
She emphasised the importance of decent housing for officers, noting that it would greatly contribute to the efforts to professionalise the police force.
“Adequate housing is not a privilege. It is a right and a cornerstone of effective service delivery. When an officer lives in secure, decent accommodation, their morale is strengthened, their productivity enhanced, and their loyalty reinforced,” she said.
AIGP James Apora, who is responsible for overseeing the project, pledged that the construction would be completed on schedule.
With this project, the Uganda Police Force is making significant progress in addressing its housing shortages, reaffirming its commitment to the well-being of its personnel, who are currently facing accommodation challenges.
