Church leaders urged to embrace gov’t programmes

SOROTI-Church leaders have been urged to embrace government development programmes to boost their financial standing, other than waiting for the donations that are not forthcoming.

The remark was made days ago by Peter Pex Paak, the resident city commissioner Soroti as 11 reverends and 12 deacons were ordained in Church of Uganda Soroti Diocese.

Paak told the church leaders to use their calling to help households fight poverty by embracing government projects.

Paak named such projects as Parish Development Model [PDM], Emyooga, Operation Wealth Creation, Youth Livelihood Programme [YLP], and Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program [UWEP].

He said that Soroti City has already received Shs 32 million that is yet to be disbursed to the wards, with more money expected in January next year.

Paak reminded the congregation that the money is for borrowing and returning it back to support other members of the groups.

Minister of State for Disability Affairs Hellen Grace Asamo, who represented vice president Jessica Alupo, urged church leaders to help change the mindset of the faithful so that they switch to commercial agriculture, especially if they are to fight poverty.

She gifted each of the newly ordained church leaders with Shs 1 million to engage in income-generating activities so that they can support their families.

The Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, who was the main celebrant of the ordination ceremony, encouraged the ordained leaders to use their calling to serve the people.

He called upon the Christians to support their church leaders so that their work is enjoyable. “God has given you new shepherds love, care, and support them,” he said.

Bishop Odongo reminded President Museveni to fulfill his pledge of Shs 390 million and 2 tractors promised Soroti Diocese.
