Busoga United FC to become community-owned

This shift to community ownership follows a number of challenges for the club, including a recent relegation from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League

JINJA, February 4, 2025 — Busoga United Football Club recently unveiled a membership plan aimed at transforming the club into a fully community-based entity.

The announcement was made by Chief Executive Officer Daniel Gulere during a recent media roundtable. “We have a strategic plan that we are following to steer the club fully into the community,” Gulere told journalists.

Under the new arrangement, fans wishing to register with the club will be required to purchase membership, with different tiers available. A basic membership will cost Shs 20,000, while a Shs 50,000 membership will include a free season ticket for the remaining home games. Fans opting for a Shs 100,000 membership will receive a jersey of their choice.

For those wishing to take a more active role in the club, fans who contribute Shs 200,000 will be eligible to sit on the executive committee of their respective counties [Masaza], while those paying Shs 500,000 will qualify for a position on the province’s executive committee.

At the highest tier, fans who contribute Shs 1 million for a gold membership will be eligible to stand for election as board members, while platinum members, who pay Shs 5 million, will be able to run for any top position on the executive committee, including the presidency of the club. His Royal Highness Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV, will remain the club’s patron.

The club’s fans have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that it will provide more financial stability and involvement in the club’s management. “I think that with the new arrangement, the club will have more resources at its disposal, and we, the paying fans, will have a say when it comes to the club’s management,” said Ali Waiswa, a fan from Iganga district.

This shift to community ownership follows a number of challenges for the club, including a recent relegation from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. His Royal Highness Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV, has given his blessing to the decision.

To manage the transition and oversee the club’s operations, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations [FUFA] has appointed an interim executive committee, chaired by Hajji Abubakar Walui, with Dina Nyago as deputy. The committee also includes Ronnie Kitonto, Geoffrey Kawanguzi, David Nelson Nkutu, Yusuf Mukoka, Patrick Atiisa, Deborah Mutesi, Sylvia Naigaga, and Samuel Mugabi.
