Bunyangabu district launches disbursement of PDM funds

BUNYANGABO – Bunyangabu district has launched the disbursement of the Parish Development Model [PDM] funds to 49 parishes.

While launching the disbursement of the PDM money to beneficiaries on Friday at Bunyangabu district headquarters in Kibiito, the chief administrative officer, Hamis Masereka Asuman said the 49 parishes in the district were each to receive Shs 57 million of the Shs 100mln promised in the last financia year.

“As a district, we have so far received Shs 2.8bln for the PDM and we have 49 parishes. Each of these parishes received Shs57mln. Effective today [Friday] each of the beneficiaries will start receiving the money they applied for on their individual accounts because this money is on their respective SACCO accounts,” he said.

He however said for the launch they only sampled two parishes to represent others for ceremonial purposes because they could not have all the parishes at once because of this event.

“We selected Nyakatonzi parish in Kiyombya Sub-county and West ward in Kibiito town council to represent all other beneficiaries for purposes of the launch but all the beneficiaries have their money on their respective SACCO accounts,” he said.

The Bunyangabu resident district commissioner, Joshua Masereka who presided over the disbursement of the PDM funds appealed to the beneficiaries not to default the money because it is meant to benefit all.

“I am very happy today that now the magic bullet has become real. Today we have launched the PDM and we have given people vouchers to go and get their money from the bank. People have been doubting that this money is not there but today, it has become a reality,” he said.

He commended government for thinking about people at the grassroots before warning the beneficiaries against eating the PDM money like how they have been doing in other programs.

“I have been running up with the youth over their program of Youth livelihood, people are not paying very well apart from UWEP which the women are really paying. I thank women because they have been able to refund this money and it has been revolving,” he said.

He warned beneficiaries not to go and marry more wives after getting the money but use it effectively to benefit everyone because it is a revolving fund.

The Bunyangabu district LCV chairman, James Ategeka Mugarama urged the beneficiaries of the programme to put to the money to good use, saying the government is using the PDM to push 39 percent of the population into the money economy.

“I appeal to the people of Bunyangabu and the country at large to use the money wisely. This is a very good initiative, and we want it implemented and as a district, we promise to be a model” he said.

Ategeka is hopeful that the programme will be successful in Bunyangabu district.

Launched in February 2022, the PDM is meant to benefit 39 percent of the active poor Ugandans and help them get out of poverty by improving their household incomes through commercial production, with enterprises such as dairy, coffee, bananas, piggery, grains, cereals, and fish farming being considered.
