Bukedea dairy farmers urged to form cooperative

The call was made days ago by State Minister for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama during a groundbreaking ceremony for the milk cooling plant.

BUKEDEA, August 5, 2024 – Dairy farmers in Bukedea have been urged to form a cooperative to market their milk and collectively further the economic well-being of the cooperative’s member-owners.

The call was made days ago by State Minister for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama during a groundbreaking ceremony for the milk cooling plant. The Dairy Development Authority [DDA] will manage the facility’s construction.

Rwamirama emphasised that the cooperative should comprise dairy farmers to run effectively. “We shall only hand over this plant to a cooperative that will be running it,” Rwamirama said.

He tasked Bukedea district officials to help the dairy farmers form a cooperative, saying a cooperative has many advantages compared to a single farmer.

Rwamirama also said the government is procuring bulls for dairy and beef production in Bukedea district.

“Very soon we shall distribute those bulls to the communities to enhance the milk production,” he said.

The minister commended the communities and leaders of Bukedea for not vandalising the government assets, saying they will help develop the area.

However, the Regional Manager DDA, David Egesa said the milk cooling facility to be established requires more space. “The space allocated to us is too small and will not serve you better,” Egesa said.

The Chief Administrative Officer Bukedea district, James Luyimbazi, pledged to work hand in hand with the political leaders to provide more space for the project.

“We shall give total support to that the project is fully functional and we work hand in hand to give space to DDA to construct the dairy facility,” Luyimbazi said.

Meanwhile, the Resident District Commissioner Bukedea, Wilberforce Tukei said when established, the milk plant stands to bring in development in the district.
