MBALE-A total of 200 youth were passed out Tuesday after undergoing training in different practical courses at Bugisu Zonal Industrial Hub, established to skill the youth in Bugisu Sub-region.
The hub which is located at Lukhonge village, Nambwa Parish, Lukhonge Sub-county in Mbale district covers the seven districts of Mbale, Sironko, Bulambuli, Manafwa, Bududa, Namisindwa, and Mbale City.
Phillip Woniala, the manager of the industrial hub, said youths received Level One certificates in carpentry, welding, hairdressing, and tailoring from the Directorate of Industrial Training [DIT].
Brian Mauso, the youth chairperson Mbale City said the hub would scale down on unemployment by providing employable skills to more youths.
“There has been reluctancy by the youth to come and participate in this skilling process but I appeal to the youth leaders to endeavor and embrace the programme,” Mauso said.
Asumin Nasike, the resident district commissioner Mbale, lauded President Museveni for supporting the youth.
Bungokho South MP, Robert Wandwasi also commended Museveni for fulfilling his pledge of establishing industrial hubs in the country to skill the youth, saying the trained youth will be supported to create their own jobs.
However, he said residents neighbouring Bugisu Zonal Industrial Hub should be given first priority to supply the facility with certain materials like food.
“The parliament signed local content bill, the residents around should be given chance to supply what they can afford to benefit from this project than buying everything from out,” Wandwasi asked.
He appealed to Museveni to extend electricity in the rural areas so that the youth who have acquired skills use it to earn a living.
John Wambogo Wekesa, the NRM chairperson Mbale City urged the youth to use the acquired skills to create jobs and wealth for themselves.
“This skilling centre is the programme of wealth creation aiming at offering skills to youths who are presently faced with a huge unemployment burden,” Wambogo, who is also director for informational, communication and technology [ICT] at Operation Wealth Creation [OWC] Secretariat said.
On her part, State House Comptroller, Jane Barekye, said she would help Members of Parliament to pass a budget, which can help the youth after graduation.
“After the youth have graduated the government will be providing them with start-up capital or tools to start working immediately,” Barekye said.
