BUGIRI– Police and health authorities in Bugiri district are investigating the circumstances under which a mother and her baby died in labour in Bugiri General Hospital recently.
The deceased, identified as Monica Nalubanga,32, was a resident of Bugiri Town Council
She died after she was allegedly left unattended after failing to raise the money the medical officers had reportedly asked for in order to help her give birth.
The death of a mother and her child at the hospital come after the government has enhanced the salaries of medical workers among other scientists in a bid to improve service delivery.
The Busoga East regional Police Spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, confirmed the incident.
She said they have started an investigation into the matter to ascertain whether they were an element of neglect by medics in the hospital.
According to Nandawula, Dr Abang Oundo, the Bugiri Hospital Medical Superintendent and Anesthetic Officer attached to the same hospital have already recorded statements following the death of a mother in the facility.
When contacted, the district Chief Administrative Officer, Martin Kisule also confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.
He said the police, the Ministry of Health, and the district are carrying out inquiries over the deaths that have created fear among the expectant mothers that visit the hospital.
He said Monica Nalubanga mysteriously lost her life in Bugiri General hospital maternity ward on July 10, 2022.
“The mother who passed on lost her life because there was no medical officer and Anesthetic officer to operate her in the theatre,” the letter reads in part,” Kisule said.
The Bugiri Resident District Commissioner, Ramathan Walugembe, told this Reporter that they have launched investigations.
Like many developing countries, Uganda has a high maternal mortality rate of 343 per 100,000 live births.
