Buganda signs MoU with Dutch agro-input firm to boost agricultural production

Under the Memorandum of Understanding [MoU], the European company will supply agro input products to supermarkets established by the kingdom in its 17 counties

KAMPALA, November 1, 2025 – The Buganda Kingdom, through its agricultural development agency, the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation [BUCADEF], has signed a partnership with a Dutch seed and fertiliser supplier in a bid to enhance agricultural productivity across the kingdom.

The agreement was signed with Dutch Seed Centre, a reputable global supplier of a wide range of agricultural inputs. Under the Memorandum of Understanding [MoU], the European company will supply agro input products to supermarkets established by the kingdom in its 17 counties.

Speaking after the signing ceremony held yesterday at Bulange, Mengo, BUCADEF Chief Executive Officer Alfred Bakyusa hailed the partnership as a significant milestone in the kingdom’s drive to improve agriculture and uplift the livelihoods of its people.

“This is a great milestone in our journey to improve the lives of the Kabaka’s subjects and to stimulate productivity among farmers in Buganda,” said Bakyusa.

Seeds and fertilisers will be the first items delivered under the partnership, coinciding with the launch of the kingdom’s first agro-supermarket in Mubende, Buwekula County, scheduled for later this month.

Bakyusa noted that the kingdom chose Dutch Seed Centre because of its professionalism and proven track record in supplying high-quality vegetable seeds to both smallholder and large-scale farmers for more than 15 years.

During the signing ceremony, Dutch Seed Centre was represented by Mark Dileman, whose commitment, according to BUCADEF, gives confidence that the partnership will boost agricultural productivity across Buganda.

The company is expected to supply inputs to all Buganda counties, including Butambala, Mawokota [Mpigi], Busiro [Wakiso], Kyaddondo [Kampala], Busujju, Bugerere (Kayunga), Ssingo [Mityana], Bulemeezi [Luweero and Nakaseke], Ssese [Kalangala], Mawogola [Sembabule], Kooki [Rakai], Buddu [Masaka, Lwengo, Kalungu and Bukomansimbi], Kyaggwe [Mukono and Buikwe], Buvuma, and Buluuli [Nakasongola], among others, where the agro-supermarkets will be established.

These outlets, branded “Ssemaduuka”, will provide farmers with access to quality agricultural inputs, tools, and seeds, thereby supporting the kingdom’s efforts to modernise agriculture and strengthen food security.

Buganda’s fertile soils and reliable rainfall make it ideal for this diverse mix of perennial and annual crops, supporting both subsistence farming and a growing commercial agriculture sector.  Some of the crops grown in the kingdom are; coffee, bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, maize, vegetables, fruits, tea, cotton, and vanilla, among others.
