Boda Boda Union promotes electric motorcycles across Uganda

Under the scheme, commercial riders can access electric motorcycles through a loan programme available via the “Union Lets Go” mobile app

KAMPALA, July 17, 2025 –– The United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union has launched a nationwide initiative to promote the adoption of electric motorcycles, aiming to limit the use petrol and curb environmental pollution.

Under the scheme, commercial riders can access electric motorcycles through a loan programme available via the “Union Lets Go” mobile app. Each bike delivers up to 85 kilometres per battery swap, supported by a network of 105 battery swap stations across the country. The initiative targets empowering 10,000 riders with affordable, eco-friendly transport options and safety gear.

Speaking at the Spiro electric bike plant in Namanve Industrial Park in Kampala, Baker Kasawuli, General Manager of the United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union, said the union’s asset financing programme is designed to address key challenges faced by riders, especially exploitation by high-interest lenders.

“Our financing model focuses on solutions that truly benefit riders,” Kasawuli stated. “In Kampala and the surrounding metropolitan area, we intend to distribute only electric motorcycles, which are safer and more environmentally friendly.”

He acknowledged some initial hesitation among the commercial riders regarding electric motorcycles but said the union will launch awareness campaigns to educate riders on the long-term cost savings and operational advantages of electric over petrol-powered bikes.

Isaac Mugambe, Sales Coordinator at Spiro, highlighted the advanced features of the bikes, which include Internet of Things [IoT] integration for real-time performance monitoring. He also pointed to battery security features that allow users to track battery usage, while reaffirming Spiro’s commitment to protecting rider data and privacy.

In terms of maintenance, Mugambe said spare parts such as tyres, brakes, and chains are readily available at shops across the country.

Union Chairman Frank Mawejje described the initiative as a stepping stone towards Uganda’s clean mobility future, offering cost-effective, sustainable transport options to riders who have traditionally been marginalised in the transport sector.

To acquire an electric motorcycle through the loan scheme, riders must download the “Union Lets Go” app and register with an initial deposit of Shs 100,000, followed by weekly payments of Shs 6,600 over two years. The package includes a driving permit, third-party insurance, a helmet, and a protective jacket to enhance rider safety.

The union’s goal is to reach at least 10,000 riders nationwide with this programme, enabling them to become active contributors to Uganda’s growing green and digital economy.

The Spiro Ekon 450M3 electric motorcycle, which is at the centre of the scheme, offers a range of up to 85 km per battery swap and delivers savings of up to 30 percent in operational costs compared to traditional petrol-powered bikes.
