Bishop Wanok cautions Alebtong youth against misusing PDM money

LIRA, December 26, 2024 The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Sanctus Lino Wanok, has cautioned the youth in Alebtong against spending the Parish Development Model [PDM] funds on alcohol consumption, emphasising that the money should be used for economic empowerment.

“Don’t receive this money and spend it on drinking alcohol; instead, use it wisely to change your lives and escape from abject poverty,” Bishop Wanok said recently during Thanksgiving prayers at Alanyi Health Centre in Abako Subcounty, Alebtong.

The ceremony was held  to show appreciation to the government for upgrading the health centre from Level III to Level IV. This upgrade will improve health service delivery and help decongest the lower health centre in Ajuri County.

The government chief whip and area Member of Parliament, Denis Hamson Obua, presided over the ceremony, which was attended by district officials.

Wanok also warned the youth against drug abuse, such as heavy drinking and smoking marijuana, lifestyles that have become increasingly common among young people.

“Why waste all your energy on drinking, instead of embracing government initiatives such as PDM and the Youth Livelihood Programme to escape poverty?” he said.

Obua stated that the facility, which is under the Catholic Mission [Lira Diocese], had been selected by the government for elevation to offer better health services to the people of Ajuri.

He explained that the government, through the Ministry of Health, had conducted an assessment and confirmed that the facility qualified for the upgrade.

Obua also spoke about wealth creation through programmes like PDM, Emyooga, the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, and the Youth Livelihood Programme.

“These programmes are designed for you. Embrace them and escape poverty, as our President has urged,” he added.

The health centre, which has 28 health workers and receives approximately 700 patients monthly, according to the in-charge Sister Mary Fahida, was established in 1968. There had been a high demand for the upgrade.

The upgrade will provide additional services such as obstetric care, promotive outpatient curative services, maternity, inpatient care, and more.
