Bishop urges Christians to embrace gov’t programmes to combat poverty

The bishop further challenged Ugandans to adopt perseverance in order to live righteously and achieve their goals in the new year, 2025

HOIMA, January 3, 2025 — The Bishop of Bunyoro Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jacob Ateirweho has urged Christians and the wider population in the Bunyoro Subregion to embrace government programmes initiated to fight household poverty.

In his sermon to the congregation on January 1, 2025, delivered at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Duhaga, Hoima City, Ateirweho emphasised that the government has introduced several programmes, including Operation Wealth Creation, Emyooga, the Youth Livelihood Programme [YLP], the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme [UWE], and the Parish Development Model [PDM], all designed to alleviate poverty. He encouraged Ugandans to take full advantage of these initiatives to enhance their household incomes.

“Instead of taking out loans from banks that charge high interest, consider these government programmes to create jobs and also boost existing businesses,” he advised.

Ateirweho stressed the importance of both Christians and the broader Bunyoro community joining the national effort to fight poverty in order to provide for their families.

He also encouraged farmers to embrace coffee and cocoa cultivation, noting that these crops are relatively easy to manage and require minimal investment, while offering opportunities to increase income.

He cautioned the public, particularly the youth, against laziness, stating that rather than resorting to theft, they should focus on hard work to secure their livelihood.

The bishop further challenged Ugandans to adopt perseverance in order to live righteously and achieve their goals in the new year, 2025. He urged the public to resist evil, even in the face of hardship.

Quoting from Daniel 3:16-30, where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship the golden image set up by King Nebuchadnezzar, Ateirweho encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and do what pleases God, rather than giving in to wrongdoing.

He also advised that, despite the current economic challenges, Ugandans should not engage in corrupt practices but instead wait for God’s intervention in their difficulties.

The Vicar General of Hoima Catholic Diocese, Monsignor Robert Mugisa, called on Christians to dedicate their lives and plans for the new year to God.

Leading the New Year’s prayer Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Bujumbura Cathedral in Hoima City, Monsignor Mugisa encouraged the faithful to seek God’s guidance before embarking on any new ventures and to reflect on what they had failed to accomplish the previous year, setting new goals for the year ahead.

Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Andrew Byakutaga, urged the kingdom’s subjects to prioritise projects that benefit their families.

Byakutaga stressed that the family is the foundation of both the kingdom and the nation and must therefore be safeguarded.

He expressed concern over the rising incidences of alcoholism and domestic violence, viewing them as threats to family wellbeing.

He advised married couples to avoid such behaviour, as it not only leads to the breakdown of families but also causes suffering for children.
