Lango Cooperative Union to co-host celebrations for 2023 International Day of Cooperatives

LIRA – The national celebrations for the 2023 International Day of Cooperatives will be co-hosted by Lango Cooperative Union [LCU] and Walimu SACCOs Union Limited at Lira City Mayors’ Gardens under the theme, “Cooperatives for Sustainable Development”.

International Day of Cooperatives is an annual celebration of the cooperative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Cooperative Alliance. This year, it will be 101 years since the world started celebrating International Day of Cooperatives.

For preparations, leaders of LCU are now calling upon cooperatives and well-wishers for financial support.

Celebrations will include week-long activities, dubbed “the Cooperative Week” which begins on June 24, up to the Day itself. The activities include national prayers, blood donation, medical camps, tree planting, entertainment, exhibitions, and a symposium.

Tonny Ogwal the vice chairperson for Lango Cooperative Union said during the first preparatory meeting held yesterday in Lira City that the commemoration will help create awareness among local farmers and the general community about the role importance of cooperatives.

“I now call upon you all to help us make some contribution towards organising for this day so that our people and the rest of the world can realize the good of the cooperative,” Ogwal appealed.

He added: “The purpose of the day is to let people know that they can alleviate poverty through cooperatives.”

A local organising committee comprising representatives from Lira Main Market, Mwalimo Cooperative Union, opinion leaders, and district leaders has been formed to aid in the mobilisation of funds ahead of the day.

Basil Edwoko, one of the committee members and chairman of Lira Main Market which has 14 primary societies said it will be good if cooperatives contribute money towards the function.

“I am very sure that the primary societies will be willing to contribute some money towards this day once called upon to do so, which will help in the organisation,” said Edwoko.

LCU has a total of 144 primary societies such as Amone-montio cooperative society in Alebtong, Nalibwoyo Growers’ Cooperative Society in Amolatar, Agwirigiri Cooperative Society, and Ojwina pur kede kwoc Cooperative Society in Lira City among others.

Last year, the Day’s celebrations took place in Sheema Municipality, Sheema district, co-hosted by Muhame Financial Services Cooperative Limited and Ankole Coffee Producers Cooperative Society Limited.

The purpose of the International Day of Cooperatives is to increase awareness on cooperatives and promote the movement’s successes and ideals of solidarity, efficiency, equality and socio-economic transformation.

As natural vehicles of collaborative partnership and prosperity for all, cooperatives contribute to economic, social, and environmental sustainability across regions and economic sectors. It is inherent among them to safeguard community relations, enhance local resources, advocate social responsibility, and adopt sustainable and long-term business practices.
