Australia’s BCCM releases inaugural Impact Report for 2025

Released recently, the report highlights a year of progress and renewed ambition for the sector, shaped by ongoing engagement with BCCM members

CANBERRA, December 16, 2025 — Australia’s cooperative and mutual sector continues to demonstrate its economic strength, with the top 100 cooperatives and mutuals generating A$ 47.7 billion in revenue, managing A$ 235.8 billion in assets and directly employing more than 94,000 Australians, according to the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals’ [BCCM] inaugural Impact Report.

Released recently, the report highlights a year of progress and renewed ambition for the sector, shaped by ongoing engagement with BCCM members. It reflects the priorities and achievements of 2025 and underscores the growing contribution of cooperatives and mutuals to Australia’s economy and communities.

Aligned with the spirit of the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives, the Impact Report outlines how BCCM has worked alongside its members to advance regulatory reform and support cooperatives and mutuals across critical areas including housing, care and energy.

Melina Morrison, Chief Executive Officer of BCCM, said the year marked an important moment for the movement. “We have celebrated the unique and increasingly essential value that our members and the broader cooperative and mutual movement deliver to Australia’s economy and communities,” she said. “Our vision is to support the doubling of the cooperative and mutual economy in Australia, because we believe co-operatives and mutuals are a better way to build real wealth for more Australians.”

BCCM Chair Rohan Mead said the past year delivered both strong results and promising prospects. “It has been a period of very significant achievement and activity for BCCM, as well as the development of valuable opportunities for the future, both locally and internationally,” he said. He pointed to the success of the Mutual Growth Tour to Europe, which strengthened international linkages and expanded understanding of alternative regulatory approaches.

Throughout the year, BCCM’s advocacy and engagement with government and regulators delivered tangible outcomes, including the extension of the Care Together programme with additional Commonwealth funding and increased recognition of cooperatives in national housing and supermarket policy discussions. The organisation also deepened its commitment to walking alongside First Nations cooperatives and mutuals through new leadership initiatives and partnerships.

The Impact Report concludes with a forward-looking agenda, reinforcing BCCM’s ambition to continue advancing the interests of its members and to help shape a more prosperous and fairer Australia.
