AUB to Mark 20 Years with Landmark General Assembly in Gambia

Banjul to host continental media leaders from April 14-17, 2026

BANJUL, January 22, 2026 — The African Union of Broadcasting [ AUB ] will convene its 17th General Assembly from 14 to 17 April 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, in a landmark gathering that will also commemorate the Union’s 20th anniversary.

Held under the theme AUB, 20 Years Serving African Media: Heritage, Innovation and Transformation,” the Assembly will provide a strategic platform to reflect on the evolution of African broadcasting while charting a course for its future amid rapid technological change and shifting audience habits.

In a global media environment shaped by digital disruption, new consumption patterns and mounting economic pressures on both public and private broadcasters, the AUB says the meeting comes at a critical moment. The Union aims to foster dialogue that honours the rich heritage of African media, encourages innovation, and strengthens the institutional transformation required to meet the demands of the 21st century.

The high-level event is expected to attract media executives, broadcast industry leaders, government officials, sports confederation representatives, academics, experts and content creators from across Africa and beyond. Delegates from sister broadcasting unions, development partners and other strategic stakeholders will also take part.

The Assembly will culminate in the prestigious AUB Media Awards Gala, now a flagship event on the continental media calendar. Alongside celebrating two decades of the Union’s existence, the gala will recognise excellence and creativity among African audiovisual professionals.

More than a celebration, the event will also serve as a major fundraising platform in support of the AUB Foundation Against Cancer [AFAC], which harnesses the power of media to raise awareness and contribute to the fight against cancer across the continent.

With 85 member organisations, the African Union of Broadcasting is the largest broadcasting body in Africa, bringing together public and private broadcasters from the continent and beyond. The Union works to develop the television and radio industry across Africa and actively promotes authentic African content through its AUBVision distribution platform and its wider digital network.
