MBALE CITY, November 18, 2024 – The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Bugisu Cooperative Union [BCU] factory, accompanied by other religious leaders. His visit was part of preparations for the consecration of St. Matthew’s Cathedral Buhugu in the North Mbale Diocese.
During the visit, Archbishop Kaziimba praised BCU for its significant contributions to the local economy, particularly in the coffee sector, and for its role in job creation. “BCU is playing a vital role in our social, spiritual, and economic transformation by not only supporting the construction of churches and mosques but also creating thousands of jobs through its coffee production,” he said.
Archbishop Kaziimba also expressed his support for the Union’s future plans. “BCU deserves our full support, and we pray that you acquire the new machines as requested by Chairman Nandala,” Kaziimba added.
A highlight of the visit was the Archbishop’s acknowledgment of Chairman Nandala-Mafabi’s immense contribution to the Church in Uganda.
He noted that Nandala-Mafabi had provided about 85 percent of the funding for the construction of St. Matthew’s Cathedral Buhugu in Sironko District. “Nandala has supported all religions—Catholics, Muslims, and Anglicans alike. Even during pilgrimages, he has always stood with us. We must pray for him and all the workers at this Union,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.
The Archbishop also urged the government to continue supporting cooperatives like BCU, stressing their importance in uplifting communities. He encouraged the Union’s workers to glorify God through their work, noting the spiritual impact of their labor.
In his closing remarks, Archbishop Kaziimba prayed for Chairman Nandala, offering blessings for the Union and its employees.
Rt. Rev. Samuel Gidudu, Bishop of North Mbale Diocese and Chairman of the Inter-Religious Council, emphasised the importance of unity and collaboration. “We must work together, encouraging our people to cooperate for the greater good, regardless of political or religious differences,” he said. “Our coffee is among the best in the world, and through our unity, we are witnessing God’s blessings and faithfulness.”
