APCYS 4.0 slated for July 2023

KUALA LUMPUR – The Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit [ APCYS 4.0 will be held in Sabah, Malaysia from 27 – 30 July 2023.

APCYS acts as a platform for youth across the Asia and Pacific region to come together and learn about youth cooperativisim

According to the organisers APCYS 4.0, expected to attract hundreds of youth,  will focus on the theme “Cooperation for Sustainable Lifestyles” and the role youth can play in furthering sustainable lifestyles for a greener planet.

Over the four days of APCYS 4.0, youth participants will get the opportunity to explore the picturesque and culturally diverse Sabah, learn and get Inspired by youth-led sustainable practices and ventures, and experience hands-on cooperative activities through community immersion and climate action.

The participants will also be able to pitch innovative cooperative business ideas through COOP Pitch and stand a chance to win cash prizes and mentoring support, enjoy the spirit of youth cooperativism and interact and network with inspiring peers from the region.

Organsiers of APCYS 4.0 say youth and youth-led initiatives have a great role in localising the 2030 sustainable development agenda as critical actors in climate action both at the national and the local levels working with the community in grassroots.

“Engaging equally with both the youth and the community is pivotal to ensure that intergenerational equity and environmental justice is delivered at various junctures of the development process,” they say.

As such, they say, APCYS 4.0 will acknowledge and encourage the role of youth in furthering sustainable lifestyles for a greener planet. “It will provide a platform for youth to come together and hear about inspiring youth-led sustainable practices and ventures, experience hands-on cooperative activities, share cooperative business ideas, and enjoy the spirit of different cultures and youth cooperativism.”

The summited by International Cooperative Alliance [ICA] Asia and Pacific and others,  will call upon the youth in the region to come together and act consciously to practice and promote sustainable lifestyles, while embracing the values of cooperation and the cooperative enterprises that places community first through concern for the environment.

It will also explore how a newer generation of pragmatic and environmentally conscious youth can be better engaged within the cooperative movement, through cooperative values and principles and hear from youth, the new and sustainable enterprise ideas on cooperatives that cater to the needs and aspirations of the youth in their country, through Coop Pitch Competition.

Similar summits [APCYS 1.0] and [APCYS 2.0] were held in Indonesia [2016], Philippines [2018], respectively, attracting over 200 young people from 17 countries.

APCYS 3.0 was held virtually in 2021 due to Covid-19 under the theme: Celebrating Youth as Torchbearers of the Cooperative Identity. 3,500 young people from ICA Asia and Pacific region participated in the event, according to the organisers.

Available population statistics show that more than half [54 percent] of the global youth population, around 2 billion people under the age of 30, lives in the Asia and Pacific region.
