Amongi empowers members of mining cooperative in Lira City

LIRA CITY, October 19, 2024 – Members of the Artisanal Miner Cooperative Society Limited, engaged in stone quarrying in Lira City East Division, received tools to enhance their business operations.

Gender Minister Betty Amongi delivered rudimentary tools valued at Shs 10 million on Saturday and pledged an additional Shs 100 million to boost the cooperative’s loan portfolio.

The cooperative members expressed their gratitude for the donation, highlighting that it will significantly improve their production capacity and provide a steady stream of income. Joan Apio, a cooperative member, emphasised that the new tools would enhance her business’s productivity, making it a rewarding source of income.

Minister Amongi distributed tools to communities in Ngetta, Opila, Doli, Acwa, and Gotopuk, all of which are engaged in quarrying activities.

Anthony Todida, the Regional Coordinator of the cooperative, pointed out various challenges faced by the sector and urged for government intervention. “This sector has not been recognized by any government entity, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. It is often overlooked, and there is a lack of support,” Todida stated.

He noted that many people in rock quarrying communities rely on their earnings for essential needs like school fees, food, and medical care. “The processes involved in producing aggregate and hardcore require capital to streamline production, and this donation will help boost output and attract a larger market,” he added.

Amongi expressed her commitment to improving the lives of people in quarrying communities in Lira City. “My goal is to uplift the most vulnerable communities in the city and help them escape poverty,” she stated, mentioning her ongoing consultations to run for Lira City Woman Member of Parliament in 2026.
