TORORO – The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called upon members of the clergy to continue preaching against homosexuality, saying the practice is against Ugandan cultural and moral values.
She said much as the country passed the anti-homosexuality law, there is still a need to continue reminding people about the teaching of the holy books.
The Speaker’s appeal was contained in her speech delivered on Sunday by the Minister of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, Betty Amongi during the fundraising drive towards the construction of St. Kizito Catholic Parish Paya in Tororo district.
The fundraising drive was spearheaded by the Tororo district Woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Achieng Opendi.
Among applauded the clergy for continuously championing the crusade against evil practices and called for continuous campaigns, saying they would help in having a morally upright generation in the country.
‘’Uganda is a God-fearing country as the motto reflects ‘’For God and my Country’’ and we have to live by it. Therefore, it’s my appeal that you the clergy are in a better place because you interface with crowds and you are more respected,’’ she said.
She challenged the church to guide its believers to support the implementation of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], adding that once the faithful are empowered economically, they will be able to actively participate in the development of church projects.
Among handed over Shs 50 million towards the construction of the church house that is estimated to house over 1,500 Christians.
The fundraising drive attracted a number of Members of Parliament coming to support their colleague Opendi including Cecilia Ogwal, the Dokolo district Woman Member of Parliament.
The Vicar General of Tororo Archdiocese Rev. Christopher Emuset commended the legislators for showing solidarity to support the construction of the house of worship.
He said it has always been the wish of the archdiocese to see to construct the house for worship to prevent believers from praying under trees.
He said the old structure has become small to accommodate the outgrown number of believers hence forcing them to pray under trees.
