ALEBTONG, August 20, 2024 – At least over 2,000 are expected to benefit from a one week medical camp organised by the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua in partnership with Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF] Directorate of Medical Services.
The camp launched on Saturday at Alanyi Health Centre III in Abako Subcounty, Alebtong district will screen and treat people for blood pressure, malaria, diabetes, and cancer among several other ailments.
Brig. Gen. Dr Patrick Ocen, Deputy Director of the UPDF Directorate of Medical Services said minor surgeries would be conducted at the medical camp while complicated cases would be referred to Bombo Military Hospital in Luwero district.
Dr Ocen said the UPDF is dedicated to offer services to people of Uganda regardless of tribe or region. “We don’t discriminate because we are a national army for Ugandans,” he said, adding that medical officers would follow up those treated for further advice.
On the other hand, Obua lauded UPDF for accepting to offer medical services to people of Ajuri County. “I want to salute the entire leadership of UPDF for granting me the opportunity and also coming to serve our people,” Obua who doubles as Ajuri County Member of Parliament said while launching the medical camp.
Meanwhile, the Alebtong district LCV Chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo cautioned politicians against politicising the programme saying health doesn’t know one’s political affiliation.
Locals who talked to this reporter were excited that they would be treated for the illnesses they have been carrying for years.
Selina Awor, a resident of Amononeno parish who attended the medical camp, said she was diagnosed with blood pressure two years ago and since then she has never not gotten any proper treatment because of financial challenges.
Fred Awoi of Aconyomo village, commended the organisers of the medical camp, saying many people in the area are trapped in poverty, and therefore cannot afford medical bills.
He also lauded the UPDF for supporting the medical camp, saying the Force offers better services, while Semi Ejang of Acaeogik village, hoped to get medicine for ulcers, saying she has never received any treatment since 2018 when she was first diagnosed of the disease.
