Alebtong farmers ask govt for machine to process livestock feeds

ALEBTONG – A farmers’ group in Alebtong town council, Alebtong district has asked the government to provide them with a machine to process livestock feeds, saying the market is available.

The group, Challenger Farmers` Association located at Nakabela ward, said they target to sell animal feeds to poultry, piggery, duck, and livestock farmers in the district.

The association, according to the chairperson, Lawrence Ogwal started in 2017 with only five members with a focus to fight poverty through commercial farming.

He said the group has since expanded to 30 registered members and currently rearing 20 pigs, 18 head of cattle, 100 local chicken ducks on their farm.

The farmers grow maize and soybeans among other crops that they can process to get animal feeds.

“We are growing but our major challenge is raising money to buy animal feeds, drugs for treatment and lastly we have never benefitted any agricultural extension services,” Ogwal briefed the Alebtong district LC5 chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo on Tuesday.

Odongo together with the resident district commissioner, Gilian Akullo, Bishop Emeritus, Alfred Acur Okidi visited the farm to access the level of progress but also have a look at the new innovations the farmers are exploring to keep their farm afloat.

Ogwal said they are using local drugs to treat the animals and birds since they cannot afford veterinary drugs.
