UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo welcomed the payment, describing it as a significant milestone for the country’s telecoms industry
KAMPALA, May 18, 2026 –- Airtel Uganda has today handed over Shs 42.9 billion to the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund [UCUSAF], reinforcing the telecommunications company’s commitment to expanding digital connectivity across Uganda.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Kampala, the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Soumendra Sahu, reaffirmed its shared vision with the Uganda Communications Commission [UCC] to bridge the digital divide and drive inclusive growth through improved communication services. UCC, which managers the UCUSAF is the regulator of Uganda’s telecommunications sector.
UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo welcomed the payment, describing it as a significant milestone for the country’s telecoms industry.
“Airtel Uganda’s contribution of Shs 42.9 billion marks its statutory 2 percent annual gross revenue contribution to the Commission [UCC]. This is not merely a box-ticking exercise; it is a testament to the vibrancy of Uganda’s telecom industry,” he said, noting that the company contributed Shs 37.9 billion last year.
He added that the latest financial contribution by reflects a thriving business environment supported by sound government policies and progressive regulation.
“While businesses focus on their bottom line, our government prioritises digital inclusion to ensure that no one is left behind in this fast-paced digital world. That is where the 2 percent levy plays a transformative role,” Thembo said.
According to Thembo, half of the funds are remitted directly to the Consolidated Fund, while the other half supports UCUSAF.
“This Fund [UCUSAF] drives national development by extending essential ICT infrastructure to underserved rural communities, where commercial investment is often limited. It supports ICT integration in education and agriculture, champions digital skills training at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology [UICT] in Nakawa, promotes digital inclusion for persons with disabilities, and facilitates the distribution of smart devices to marginalised communities,” he said.
Thembo said Airtel Uganda’s contribution goes beyond fulfilling legal obligations.
“It is about demonstrating responsible corporate citizenship. Airtel Uganda has shown that this responsibility is a shared investment in our nation’s future,” he said.
He concluded by commending Airtel Uganda for “its partnership and commitment to national progress”.
“Together, we are building a more connected and inclusive Uganda, opening doors to endless digital opportunities for every citizen,” he said.
