GULU CITY, September 25, 2025 — Agro-input dealers in Acholi Subregion have been trained on safe handling of pesticides and chemicals.
The week-long training which concluded recently at Global Friendship Hotel in Gulu City was conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF] in partnership with Makerere University, and Acholi Agro Input dealers Association [ AADA] attracted 40 participants.
Alex Otut, the Senior Agricultural Inspector at MAAIF said the training which mainly focused on safe handling of pesticides and other chemicals sold by the agro input dealers seeks to build their capacity to support the function of safe input distribution in Acholi Subregion.
Key on the training list was the safety and protection of both the dealers and the farmers on using the chemicals which can have adverse impact.
According to Otut, the participants who were awarded certificates will undergo another phase of training before they are registered and considered for distributions of inputs by government.
Moses Okumu, Chairperson of Acholi Agro Input Dealers Association says many of the agro-input dealers end up in the business without adequate knowledge which affects the quality of inputs such as fertiliser delivered to the farmers who are also in most cases illiterate.
The participants are expected to give prescriptions, advice among other support to the farmers in order to boost quality production of crops in Acholi Subregion.
