Africa posts 2.2 percent growth in coffee exports

KAMPALA-Exports of all forms of coffee from Africa increased by 2.2 percent to 1.02 million bags in February 2023 from 1.0mln bags in February 2022, the International Coffee Organisation [ICO] says.

ICO in its Coffee Market Report for Match 2023, further says for the first five months of the current coffee year, exports totalled 5.23mln bags as compared with 5.15mln bags in coffee year 2021/22, up 1.4 percent.

ICO attributes the jump in Africa’s exports to Uganda which had shipments of coffee increasing by 6.6 percent to 0.48mln bags as compared with 0.45mln bags in February 2022.

Uganda, Africa’s top exporter of coffee, produces both Arabica and Robusta types mainly on smallholder farms, with the latter being produced in bigger volumes.

Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo are three other origins of note for February 2023, with their exports up 62.5 percent, 18.1 percent and 30 percent, respectively, adding to Uganda’s upward impetus within the region.

“Kenya was another notable origin in February 2023, though for different reasons, with exports down 43.5 percent,” says ICO.

Meanwhile, global green bean exports in February 2023 totaled 7.94mln bags, as compared with 9.95mln bags in the same month of the previous year, down 20.23 percent.

In February 2023, South America’s exports of all forms of coffee decreased by 29.8 percent to 3.48mln bags, driven by the three main origins of the region, Brazil, Colombia and Peru, which saw their combined exports fall by 30.7 percent.

On the other hand, exports of all forms of coffee from Asia & Oceania decreased by 15.3 percent to 2.99mln bags in February 2023 and were down 5.6 percent to 17.4mln bags in the first five months of coffee year 2022/23. Vietnam and India are the main drivers behind the latest downturn.

The ICO report shows that In February 2023, exports of all forms of coffee exports from Mexico & Central America were up 2.4 percent to 1.42mln bags as compared with 1.39mln in February 2022.

“For the first five months of the current coffee year, however, exports remain down 10.1 percent, totalling 4.03mln bags as compared with 4.48mln bags in October–February 2021/22.”

Coffee Consumption

World coffee consumption increased by 4.2 percent to 175.6mln bags in coffee year 2021/22 and according to ICO, it is expected to increase to 178.5mln bags in coffee year 2022/23.

As a result, ICO reports, the world coffee market is expected to undergo another year of deficit, with a shortfall of 7.3mln bags in coffee year 2022/23.
