Africa coffee exports drop 5.1 percent as drought hits Uganda

KAMPALA-Exports of all forms of coffee from Africa decreased by 5.1 percent to 13.73 million bags in coffee year 2021/22 from 14.48mln bags in the previous coffee year, International Coffee Organisation [ ICO ] says in its latest report for October 2022.

According to ICO, Burundi and Uganda were the two main contributors to the region’s downturn as the latter’s exports declined due to the impact of drought in most of the coffee growing regions, “which led to a shorter main harvest season in central and eastern parts of Uganda, and hence lower output and exports.”

Uganda grows both Robusta and Arabica coffee types, with the former mainly grown on the slopes of Mt. Elgon while Robusta is grown in the country’s lowlands of Buganda, Ankole, and Busoga, among others.

Further, Ethiopia, the second largest producer and exporter of the region, saw its exports of all forms of coffee increase marginally to 4.02mln bags in coffee year 2021/22 from 3.98mln bags in the previous coffee year.

Global coffee exports

ICO says global exports of green beans were down 1.1 percent in coffee year 2021/22, totalling 116.07mln bags from 117.32mln bags in coffee year 2020/21.

The decrease in green bean exports is a reflection of reduced world coffee production, which is estimated to be down 2.1 percent to 167.17mln bags for coffee year 2021/22, as compared with an estimated 170.83mlnn bags in coffee year 2020/21.

On the other hand, total exports of soluble coffee increased by 6.1 percent in coffee year 2021/22 to 12.1mln bags from 11.4mln bags in coffee year 2020/21. The share of soluble coffee of the total exports of all forms of coffee was 9.4 percent for the year, the highest on record.

Brazil was the largest exporter of soluble coffee, shipping 3.89mln bags, followed by India with 2.22mln bags, with Indonesia in third place at 1.66mln bags exported in coffee year 2021/22. Exports of roasted beans increased by 5.0 percent in coffee year 2021/22 to 0.82mln bags.

Production and Consumption

The estimated outlook for total production in coffee year 2021/22 remains unchanged at 167.2mln bags, a 2.1 percent decrease as compared to 170.83mln bags in the previous coffee year.

World coffee consumption was projected to grow by 3.3 percent to 170.3mln 60-kg bags in 2021/22 as compared to 164.9mln for coffee year 2020/21. In 2021/22, consumption was expected to exceed production by 3.1mln bags.
