Aduku traders protest poor sanitary conditions

KAMPALA, November 6, 2023 – More than 300 traders in Aduku town council in Kwania district are protesting the accumulated heaps of garbage that continue to emit a strong and unpleasant smell.

On Sunday, a group of furious traders took to the streets to protest the filth in the town council, chanting, “We want our town clean.” The traders collected garbage and dumped it in front of the town council offices.

They accused the town council authorities of failing to dispose of the garbage that has accumulated in places like the mayor’s garden and various streets. They also claimed the smell from the rotten garbage has polluted the air.

Denis Aweri, the chairman National Chambers of Commerce in charge Kwania said the town looks very dirty yet businessmen pay taxes and other fees.

He added: “We are frustrated because we have been informing the relevant offices about the decomposing heap of garbage dumped at the mayor’s garden but no action has been taken and we want the garbage collected before Friday this week.”

Lily Atim, a vendor at Aduku Daily Market said the town authorities have failed to dispose of garbage for two months now, leaving residents suffering from the stench.

Juliet Otwom, a juice dealer said, “The bad smell produced by the piled heal of garbage has scared away my customers. I need an immediate intervention by the town council leaders.”

Jimmy Uhuru, the LCI Chairman of Aduku township cell said the sanitary conditions in Aduku town council are bad and need urgent attention, “Even the vendors don’t have dustbins to deposit their rubbish,” he said.

Officials respond

By the time of compiling this story, all offices at Aduku town council were under key and lock. However, Emmanuel Ametu, Kwania District Internal Security Officer pleaded with the traders to calm down, saying, he would forward the matter to the relevant authorities to ensure the matter is expeditiously handled.

On his part, Herimos Odongo, the town clerk of Aduku town council blamed the delay to collect garbage on nonpayment of road gangs. “Our road gangs are striking over nonpayment of their wages. We used to pay them with money raised from the local revenue but now we have to send money to the central government and it is remitted after more than three months and you are aware our tractor is down,” he said in a telephone interview last Thursday.
