UPU graduates asked to embrace agriculture

FORT PORTAL – The Uganda Pentecostal University [UPU] chancellor Maggie Kigozi has urged graduates to be innovative and embrace agriculture, saying the sector offers opportunities that can improve their livelihoods.

The Kigozi who was installed as the university’s new chancellor on Saturday during its 18th graduation ceremony replaced the late Justice Rubby Opio Aweri who died last year.

The chancellor’s advice to students to embrace agricultural production was in line with this year’s graduation theme which was, “Resilience and innovations are key for survival”.

She said her focus as a new chancellor will be fostering agriculture and innovations.

“You have graduated in different disciplines and now you have got your certificates, but you need to be innovative. Employ yourselves and become entrepreneurs for you to survive,” she said.

She said living in the world of unemployment means one should embrace change, take risks, and believe in oneself.

“Some graduates hate agriculture but I implore you to embrace it. Agriculture is the backbone of our country and getting involved in agriculture does not mean you are putting your degrees to waste, no. You can get involved either directly or indirectly,” she said.

The university vice chairperson board of directors, Dr, Nathan Bainomugisha said education opens way for opportunities and implored graduates to utilise it appropriately.

“Education is the best investment a parent can give to a child. Go out there and use this investment for a bright future,” he said.

He however urged government to invest much in education in order to make it better.

During graduation, 319 students were awarded certificates, diplomas, and degrees in different disciplines.

Out of the 319 students, 200 were males and 119 were females.

According to the acting academic registrar, Henry Mike Aleta, 61 students missed graduation out of which 41 failed to clear graduation fees and 20 dropped out before completing studies.
