Academy launched in Kenya to boost capacity of SACCO staff

NAIROBI-SACCOS in Kenya stand to be managed better with the recent establishment of the African Confederation of Cooperative and Credit Associations [ACCOSCA] Academy in the country.

The academy, said to be the first of its kind in Africa, will offer hybrid training programmes aimed at enhancing professionalism and competencies of staff running cooperatives in the country.

Such programmes to be taught include governance and leadership, regulation and compliance, and financial education.

With 27,000 registered cooperatives registered in the country, the training will boost the contribution of the sector towards the country’s gross domestic gross product [GDP] of which cooperatives currently contribute 45 percent.

Data indicates that the cooperative sector contributes 32 percent of the savings in Kenya.

Early October, top Sacco players from Kenya and Africa and other 17 international climbers participated in the Climb Africa where they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds to construct the academy.

Through the academy, other SACCOS in Africa will be supported with cross learning and knowledge transfer.

“The Accosca Academy is set to be the next big thing in the African cooperative movement,” ACCOSCA says.

The academy will provide opportunities for Sacco employees to gain knowledge, learn new skills and build confidence they will apply to benefit members.

Further, it will also create a platform where learners will share ideas and experiences and consequently enable trained to learn best practices from across Africa and the world.

Still, it will also offer an opportunity to SACCO managers a forum to address critical issues and how to solve problems and establish best practices.

“At The Accosca Academy, veteran financial professionals and industry novices come together—in-person and virtually—to teach, learn, and grow individually and collectively while connecting with others who share the goal of improving communities throughout Africa,” said Lois Kitsch, Chairperson, International-Credit Union Development Educator [I-CUDE] African Cooperative Development Foundation.

ACCOSCA is a Pan-African confederation of national associations of savings and credit cooperatives societies. ACCOSCA opened its doors in 1968 and is currently governed by domicile laws and the ACCOSCA constitution
