GULU – Ministry of Local Government has delivered 415 motorcycles to sub-county Chairpersons in northern Uganda.
The event took place days ago in Gulu City at Pece War Memorial Stadium and brought together the leadership of the lower local governments in Acholi, Lango and West Nile sub region.
While handing over the motorcycles, Yahama XTZ 125 E model, the Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi has cautioned the beneficiaries from misuse of the means of transport provided.
He explained that the motorcycles were procured to support the local leaders at the grassroots to monitor government projects mainly the Parish Development Model.
“The poverty level in the region is higher as everybody knows about it and know that you have these means of transport, use them well to mobilize the locals to improve their livelihoods” Magyezi warned local leaders.
The Chairman Patiko sub-county lower local government, Patrick Komakech commended government for the support.
He noted that the motorcycles will help to address the challenges of monitoring and supervision which many of them as lower local governments were not able to execute.
The Gulu District Chief Administrative Officer [CAO] Ismail Ochengen appealed to the local leaders to make good use of their motorcycles to mobilize the locals to widen and boost the local revenue based of their respective areas of administration.
Meanwhile, the Resident City Commissioner for Gulu Jane Francis Okili warned that they will confiscate any of these motorcycles from local leaders who may abuse them.
“The government has spent taxpayer money to procure these means of transport to you and we can’t watch you misuse them,” Okili warned.
