Wazalendo SACCO ranked among Africa’s top 20 by assets and membership
DAR ES SALAAM, October 18, 2026 — Wazalendo SACCO [WSACCO] has been ranked among Africa’s top 20 Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs] by total assets and membership, according to a continental ranking by the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations [ACCOSCA].
The recognition was announced during the 2026 SACCA Congress, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from October 11 to 16. The congress brings together leaders in the cooperative financial sector to exchange experiences, share best practices and explore innovative approaches to strengthening SACCOs across Africa.
With total assets of approximately Shs 1.4 trillion, Wazalendo SACCO continues to strengthen its financial capacity to mobilise savings, extend credit and improve members’ financial well-being.
Wazalendo SACCO Board of Directors Chairman, Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, said the congress provided an opportunity for the institution to benchmark its performance against leading cooperative financial organisations and strengthen its governance and financial sustainability.

“Our participation in the 2026 SACCA Congress provides an important opportunity to benchmark Wazalendo SACCO against leading cooperative financial institutions, exchange experiences and learn best practices in governance, financial sustainability and member service. As a Board, we remain committed to providing strategic leadership that strengthens the SACCO’s growth, safeguards members’ savings and advances their financial well-being,” Lt Gen Kavuma said.
He added that continuous learning and effective governance were essential to strengthening institutional resilience and ensuring the SACCO remained responsive to members’ evolving financial needs.
The SACCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Yusuf Magero Buha, said the institution would focus on translating lessons and partnerships gained from the congress into practical improvements in service delivery, digital innovation and operational efficiency.
“The SACCA Congress offers a valuable platform for learning, networking and exploring innovative approaches to delivering better financial services to our members. We are committed to translating the knowledge and partnerships gained from this engagement into practical improvements in service delivery, digital innovation and operational efficiency, while ensuring that Wazalendo SACCO continues to grow sustainably and meet the evolving needs of its membership,” Brig Gen Magero said.
He said innovation, efficiency and member-centred services remained key priorities as the SACCO strengthened its operations and expanded access to financial services.
The ranking marks a significant milestone for WSACCO and Uganda’s cooperative financial sector, highlighting the contributions of its members, Board of Directors, management and staff to the institution’s growth.

As the cooperative movement continues to evolve across Africa, WSACCO says it remains committed to strengthening its financial position, improving service delivery and promoting members’ financial welfare through responsible financial management and sustainable growth.
