U.S., Argentine representatives join African Mining Week 2026 as mineral diplomacy reshapes supply chains

CAPE TOWN, September 17, 2026 — Senior representatives from the United States and Argentina will participate in African Mining Week [AMW] 2026 in Cape Town as African countries seek to attract investment into mineral exploration, processing and value addition.

Ashley Ndir, Principal Commercial Officer at the U.S. Commercial Service under the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, and Raúl Santiago Ailán, Argentina’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Head of Mission to South Africa, have joined the speakers for the October 14–16 conference.

Ndir will participate in a U.S.–Africa roundtable on advancing local beneficiation and standardising environmental, social and governance [ESG] frameworks.

Her participation is expected to focus on trade and investment opportunities between the United States and African mineral-producing countries, particularly efforts to strengthen market integration and increase value addition within Africa.

The United States has increased its engagement in Africa’s critical minerals sector through government agencies and private-sector partnerships aimed at supporting mineral development, infrastructure and trade.

Among the U.S. institutions involved are the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.

Ailán will participate in a panel on realigning national and international goals to advance global investment in Africa’s mineral value chains.

Argentina has emerged as a major lithium producer and is seeking to expand copper production, while African countries are seeking investment in mineral exploration, processing and related infrastructure.

The conference is expected to provide a platform for discussions on investment, technology, technical expertise and cooperation between African and Latin American mining jurisdictions.

AMW 2026 will be held under the theme “Mining the Future: Unearthing Africa’s Full Mineral Value” and will bring together government officials, investors, mining companies and international partners.

Discussions will cover mineral exploration and production, processing, beneficiation, infrastructure and investment opportunities across Africa.
