Lira: Obua urges students to embrace Emyooga for economic empowerment and job creation
LIRA CITY, March 12, 2026 — Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua has urged students of Uganda Technical College Lira to embrace the Emyooga Programme as a pathway to their economic empowerment and job creation.
While presiding over the pass-out of 917 students who completed patriotism training at the college in Lira City days ago, Obua advised the students to shun strikes and riots and instead focus on contributing positively to Uganda’s development.
Obua, who also serves as Ajuri County Member of Parliament, encouraged the graduates to uphold the core principles of the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM], including patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation and democracy.
He said government-led wealth creation initiatives introduced by the ruling party are intended to uplift communities and improve livelihoods. Among the programmes he cited were the Parish Development Model, and the Emyooga Programme among others.
“Please join these programmes because Emyooga, for example, supports carpenters, welders and other groups. Government has injected funds in every constituency for its implementation, provided proper audits are conducted,” he said.
Obua also acknowledged that the country faces several challenges but urged the youth not to migrate abroad in search of greener pastures. Instead, he encouraged them to take advantage of the available government initiatives to create wealth locally.
He commended the government for promoting patriotism and thanked Yoweri Museveni and the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps for their efforts to remind Ugandans about the country’s progress and future direction.
The Principal of the college, Jacob Akunbere, emphasised the importance of patriotism training, saying it instils love for oneself, the community and the country.
He also thanked the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda, led by Janet Kataaha Museveni, for integrating patriotism into the academic curriculum.
Akunbere, however, noted that the college still faces challenges in its ambition to become a fully-fledged centre of excellence for road construction training. He cited the lack of key equipment such as low-bed trucks, tyre rollers and paver machines.
“With these machines, the college could become one of the best institutions in Uganda for road construction training,” he said.
He added that although the college has made progress with new administration blocks, staff accommodation, hostels, classrooms and a road unit, several old structures on campus remain dilapidated, including buildings roofed with hazardous asbestos sheets that require urgent replacement.
