Clear your debts, journalists told ahead of AGM

SOROTI CITY, February 4, 2026 — The Soroti City West Division Journalists’ Association has issued a warning to members with outstanding debts, urging them to clear their arrears ahead of the upcoming Annual General Meeting [AGM] whose preparations are ongoing.

During a recent meeting held at the Church of Uganda Cathedral, members informed defaulters that legal action would be taken against those who fail to repay loans acquired from the association’s Soroti City West Journalists’ Emyooga Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation [SACCO].

The association’s Chairperson, George Muron, said poor loan repayment has hindered many members from fully benefiting from the SACCO’s revolving fund.

“I want us to concentrate on growing our SACCO. Those who have not paid should get serious and repay the money,” Muron warned.

He revealed that the SACCO’s current capital stands at Shs 70 million, but its growth has been constrained by low loan recovery.

He urged members to increase their savings and purchase more shares to strengthen the SACCO’s capital base.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Loans Committee, Simon Emwamu, proposed a 30-day ultimatum for defaulters to settle their debts, describing it as the final reminder before the association takes action to recover funds from the errant members.

“We shall take radical decisions if they do not heed our reminder,” Emwamu said.

Another member, Ambrose Okiring, called for collective responsibility in recovering the funds, urging members to put aside their differences and focus on the growth of their financial organisation.

The Emyooga programme is a Ugandan presidential initiative launched in August 2019 to transform 68 per cent of households from subsistence to market-oriented production through job creation and improved household incomes. It targets 18 specialised groups, including boda boda riders, women entrepreneurs, journalists and market vendors, by providing seed capital to SACCOs managed by the Microfinance Support Centre [MSC].
