Relief as Zombo District Teachers’ SACCO receives Shs 10mln from well-wishers

ZOMBO, November 3, 2025 — There was a sigh of relief among teachers in Zombo district after their Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation [SACCO] received a significant financial boost of Shs 10 million from well-wishers.
The development was revealed to our reporter on Saturday by the Chairperson of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union [UNATU] Zombo Branch, Immaculate Atimango, who also doubles as Chairperson of the Zombo Teachers’ SACCO.
In an interview at the SACCO offices located in Paidha Town, the SACCO executives confirmed that the contribution came as a result of lobbying efforts by Esther Afoyochan, the Zombo District Woman Member of Parliament and a Parliamentary Commissioner.
Atimango recalled that during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5, 2024 at Ajei Primary School, MP Afoyochan, who was the Chief Guest, had encouraged teachers to form a SACCO and pledged to mobilise financial support for them.
She commended the MP for honouring her pledge, noting that the SACCO had been struggling with limited resources drawn from small contributions by a few founding members. She also appealed to more teachers in the district to join the SACCO, saying it offers a reliable avenue for financial empowerment.
Currently, the SACCO has 50 registered members, each contributing a total of Shs 30,000 for membership, registration, and savings. According to the UNATU Zombo Branch leadership, the district has over 984 potential teachers who could join the SACCO and strengthen its growth.
Edward Opar, Treasurer of UNATU Zombo Branch and Vice Chairperson of the SACCO, said the financial support will bring much-needed relief to teachers burdened by multiple loans from commercial institutions.
“This will boost teachers’ morale. Many of us face numerous challenges, and the SACCO will enable us to access loans at low interest rates. This will help teachers engage in income-generating activities instead of relying solely on classroom teaching and monthly salaries,” Opar explained.
Jolly Achan, Headteacher of Zale Primary School and Secretary of the SACCO, expressed optimism that the support will help teachers better manage expenses such as school fees for their children. She urged fellow teachers to manage the SACCO funds responsibly to ensure real financial transformation among members.
Meanwhile, MP Afoyochan said her friends came together to help fulfil the promise she made to teachers last year.
“This money serves as start-up capital for the teachers’ SACCO. The goal is to empower teachers to use their own resources for credit instead of rushing to banks or moneylenders,” she emphasised.
