Politics: Businessman Tanna roots for formation of cooperative in manifesto

LIRA CITY, August 14, 2025 – The ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] Entrepreneurs League has been urged to form a cooperative to enable party’s entrepreneurs access affordable financing more easily.

Businessman Sanja Tanna, who is contesting for the position of National Chairperson of the NRM Entrepreneurs League, said that establishing a cooperative would facilitate access to low-interest credit for members.

While addressing party delegates at the Vintage Lounge in Lira City on Saturday, Tanna also advocated for formal representation of Ugandan entrepreneurs in Parliament and local government councils, similar to the representation already afforded to workers, youth, women, persons with disabilities, elders, and other special interest groups.

“In this country, there is no government budget allocation, no secretariat, and no official representation of entrepreneurs in Parliament or local government. Entrepreneurs are simply left to struggle on their own,” said Tanna.

“As NRM leaders, we need to wake up and change the narrative by electing a leader who will push our agenda and form a vibrant cooperative,” he added.

Tanna is competing against another prominent businessman Augustus Ceasar Mulenga and the incumbent, Dr Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari, Member of Parliament for Mbarara City North.

Also campaigning in Lira City was Robert Okodia, who is contesting for the position of Vice Chairperson of the NRM Entrepreneurs League for Northern Uganda.

He noted that entrepreneurs employ more people than the government and contribute significantly to tax revenues. Therefore, he argued, they deserve a voice in the country’s political discourse.

Okodia stated that his mission is to inspire, educate, and advocate for the formation of a cooperative, secure parliamentary representation, and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs in Uganda.

He also emphasised the importance of financial literacy training, access to low-interest loans, and capacity building for businesspeople.
