Wagagai Coffee Farmers’ SACCO transforms the life of a member: The success story of Alex Maguge

From modest beginnings to becoming a successful entrepreneur and landowner, Maguge’s story is a powerful testament of how Saving and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs] can lift individuals out of poverty and guide them towards long-term financial independence

KAPCHORWA, July 28, 2025 –– In the lush hills of Uganda’s coffee-growing region of Sebei, a quiet financial revolution is reshaping lives, one member at a time. At the heart of this transformation is Alex Maguge, a once-struggling farmer who, through dedication and support from Wagagai Coffee Farmers’ SACCO, has built a thriving business and secured a stable future for his family.

From modest beginnings to becoming a successful entrepreneur and landowner, Maguge’s story is a powerful testament of how Saving and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs] can lift individuals out of poverty and guide them towards long-term financial independence.

Humble beginnings: Small savings, big dreams

When Maguge joined the SACCO in September 2023, he was determined to change his life. With an initial deposit of just Shs 2,500, his vision was simple but ambitious: to build a secure future for himself and his family.

He also paid a membership fee of Shs 35,000, gaining access to the SACCO’s financial services. Soon after, he purchased a share worth Shs 100,000, which qualified him for a business loan of Shs 1 million.

“I didn’t expect to become rich overnight,” Maguge said. “But I knew the SACCO was the key to building something sustainable. It was about laying a foundation, a small step that would grow over time.”

Guidance and support: The role of Shalmin Chemonges

Behind Maguge’s success stands the steady hand of Shalmin Chemonges, the Credit Officer at Wagagai Coffee Farmers SACCO. As a financial advisor and mentor, Mr Chemonges provided critical guidance in savings, loan management, and business planning.

“Maguge came to me with a clear plan,” Chemonges recalled. “He wasn’t just looking for money to get by, he was focused on building a real business. After reviewing his situation and discussing his goals, we approved his application.”

With the loan approved, Maguge embarked on a carefully planned journey. He used the funds to buy goods in bulk for his matooke [banana] business, selling them at local markets to generate profit. He diligently reinvested his earnings to expand operations.

“The loan gave me the chance to scale up,” he said. “Buying in bulk increased my profit margins, and that changed everything.”

A landmark achievement for Maguge

One of the most significant milestones in Maguge’s journey has been the purchase of land. For him, it symbolises more than financial security, it represents legacy.

“Owning land gives me peace of mind,” Maguge said. “It’s something I can pass on to my children. It’s not just about today, but about generations to come.”

The Impact of Wagagai Coffee Farmers’ SACCO

Maguge’s journey illustrates the powerful impact of community-based financial institutions. With accessible savings schemes and low-interest loans, Wagagai Coffee Farmers’ SACCO provided the tools he needed to succeed.

“Maguge is a prime example of how our members can use SACCO services to grow their businesses and improve their lives,” said Mr Shalmin. “We offer more than just financial products; we’re a community of support and encouragement.”

His success proves that with the right financial tools, discipline, and guidance, anyone, regardless of their starting point, can achieve financial stability.

A message of hope

“I want to encourage others who are where I once was,” Maguge shared. “It doesn’t matter how little you start with. What matters is your determination to change your life. The SACCO gave me the tools, but it was my hard work and belief in myself that made the difference.”

With a successful business, a comfortable home, and land to his name, Maguge is building a legacy, one that is rooted in perseverance and community support. As he looks to the future with optimism, he remains grateful to the SACCO that helped him take his first steps.
