Kikuube schools to undergo facelift after receiving Shs 1bln

KIKUUBE,  January 31, 2025 – Seven schools in Kikuube district are set to benefit from a major renovation project after the Kikuube District Local Government launched the refurbishment of dilapidated school structures.

According to Faridah Ndagano, the Kikuube District Communication Officer, the renovation project for schools in three sub-counties of Kabwoya, Kiziranfumbi, and Bugambe, will cost Shs 1 billion.

She explained that as part of this project, one classroom block at Wambabya Primary School will be renovated at a cost of Shs 30 million. At Kyabaseke Primary School, an extension of an existing classroom block and the construction of a store and an office will cost Shs 31mln.

Ndagano further mentioned that seven classroom blocks and offices at Kitondora Primary School will be renovated at a cost of Shs 219mln. At Kikoboza Primary School, one classroom block and an office will be renovated for Shs 140mln.

Other schools to benefit from the renovations include St Jude Rwentahi, where a classroom block will be constructed at a cost of Shs 119mln, and John Bosco Primary School, which will have a 2-in-1 classroom block built for Shs 119mln. Kayera Primary School, whose roof was blown off three years ago, will also have its roof renovated at a cost of Shs 30mln.

Ndagano noted that the three-month projects have been handed over to the contractors and are funded under the School Facility Grant [SFG] and School Maintenance Grant.

Vincent Opio, the District LCV Vice Chairperson, warned contractors against delivering substandard work and urged the school managers to closely supervise and monitor the projects to ensure value for money. He emphasised that the district would withhold payment from contractors if they deliver unsatisfactory work.

As district leaders, we are excited about the renovation and construction of classrooms at these schools. The state of the school structures has been compromising the learning environment for the pupils, Opio said.

During the launch of the projects on Friday, Tobias Ahaabwe, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Kikuube, highlighted that most of the schools in the district are founded by religious institutions, with the government stepping in to provide support. He urged the boards of these schools not to abandon their supervisory roles if the schools are to continue thriving.

Ahaabwe also encouraged teachers to focus not only on preparing pupils to pass exams but also on instilling discipline, to nurture well-rounded future leaders.

“The government has made considerable efforts to ensure social services are accessible to the people by constructing seed schools, roads, and markets. I encourage the community to take full advantage of government projects and programmes to achieve social and economic transformation,” he added.

John Bigabwenkya, a parent at Wambabya Primary School, commended the government for funding the renovation of the school, noting that it was the first time the school, which was established in 1960, had received such attention. He mentioned that despite the school’s long history and the many prominent government officials and leaders who had passed through it, the school’s structures had been in a poor state for many years.
