UCA urges Ugandans to embrace cooperatives

KAMPALA, July 16, 2024 – Uganda Cooperative Alliance [ UCA ] has called upon Ugandans to embrace cooperatives if the country is to have socioeconomic transformation.
Speaking during the prayers held for the Cooperative Week in Uganda at Hotel Africana in Kampala led by the Inter-religious Council, UCA General Secretary, Ivan Asiimwe said the growth of cooperatives in the country has been affected by capitalism, among other factors.
Asiimwe cited countries such as Germany as having progressed in cooperative development, saying some of their cooperatives are minting big money from the coffee business yet they only import from producing countries like Uganda.
On his part, Vicar General of Kampala Archdiocese urged cooperative leadership to always prioritise transparency and honesty in the running of the cooperatives.
At the same function religious leaders cited various ideas that cooperatives can take up to spur development in health, transport and social welfare sectors.
The Cooperative Week in Uganda, which was rescheduled to run from July 15 –19, 2024, precedes the International Day of Cooperatives celebrated every first Saturday of July. But government in Uganda postponed the celebrations of the Day to July 20,2024 due to various reasons.
However other activities lined up to mark the week long celebrations include: Tree planting in Nawaikoke Subcounty, Bulamogi Countyin Kaliro district [Jul 16th], blood donation launch at Hotel Africana [Jul 17th],National Microfinance & Savings Groups Conference [Jul 17th], Concern for Community [Focus on SDG3] at Buyoya Health Centre III in Bukomansimbi district [Jul 17th] , and Commissioning of UFCC–MG Office in Buwama town council in Mpigi district [Jul 17th].
Others include: launch of the medical camp at Buyoya Health Centre III in Bukomansimbi district [Jul 18th], sports gala at Misanvu Demonstration Church of Uganda Primary School Grounds, Bukomansimbi district [Jul 18], launch of the exhibition at Misanvu Demonstration Church of Uganda Primary School Grounds, Bukomansimbi district [Jul 18th], and symposium at Marple Leaf Hotel, Masaka City [Jul 19th]. The activities run under the theme “Cooperatives build a Better Future for All”.
Kibinge Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society Limited this Saturday is the host of this years celebrations marking 102nd International Day of Cooperatives at Kibinge Subcounty in Bukomansimbi district under the theme “Cooperatives build a Better Future for All”.
The International Day of Cooperatives is a perfect opportunity to emphasise that cooperative enterprises build a better future for all people. Cooperatives create decent work, uphold gender equality, and foster innovation, particularly with the involvement of new generations.
With an innate sense of social responsibility, cooperatives prioritise people and the environment, creating optimal conditions for producers and consumers. They educate, care for, and manage the natural, human, and financial resources of each community in pursuit of the common good.
This way of organising social-economic relations has 200 years of proven history and is today the most direct path towards a sustainable future in social, economic, and environmental matters.
