50 cooperatives in Apac and Kwania districts receive farm inputs

APAC, April 15, 2025 – Fifty cooperative societies in Apac and Kwania districts have received a consignment of farm inputs from the National Oil Seeds Project [NOSP], an initiative aimed at promoting oil seed cultivation during the current planting season.

The inputs comprising soybeans, simsim, groundnuts, sunflower seeds, and 20 metric tonnes of bio-fertilisers – were delivered last Friday to the production departments of both districts. The supplies were later handed over to the selected farmer cooperatives by NOSP officials.

Among the cooperatives that benefited are Kairomo Women’s Produce Cooperative Society Ltd from Akali Subcounty, Alai Women Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd from Inomo Town Council, and Bediworo Women Cooperative Society Ltd from Inomo Subcounty, all in Kwania District. Apac District beneficiaries include Abulomogo Youth Cooperative Society Ltd and Anyapo Women Cooperative Society Ltd, among others.

Speaking during the handover, Solomon Okino, NOSP Coordinator for the Lango and Teso sub-regions, explained that each subcounty in the two districts will receive inputs for five farmers’ groups.

“We are targeting five groups per subcounty, translating to 25 groups per district – 50 in total,” said Okino. “Each group will receive two tonnes of foundation oil seeds worth Shs 2 million. These seeds germinate reliably and yield abundantly. They will be planted, multiplied, and distributed to other farmers.”

He urged farmers to take advantage of the ongoing rains and plant the seeds without delay.

“My message to the farmers is clear – use the available rainfall to plant in time, weed properly, and later share the multiplied seeds with others. This will help improve harvests and boost incomes,” he added.

George Johnson Ojok Ocen, Kwania District Production Coordinator, also advised farmers to follow best agricultural practices for maximum yield.

“Prepare your gardens well, space crops properly, and follow the specifications indicated on the seed packaging,” he said. “Spray your crops in time to control weeds and be cautious when intercropping.”

Ocen further noted that oil seed crops are high-yielding and benefit from a readily available market.

“NOSP will provide market access for these crops. I encourage all farmers to invest in this project to enhance household incomes,” he emphasised.

Farmers who received the inputs expressed appreciation for the timely delivery and the quality of the seeds.

Eunice Acen, Chairperson of Kairomo Women’s Produce Cooperative Society Ltd, said the distribution would help curb the spread of counterfeit agricultural inputs on the market.

“The seeds have come at the right time and will help us overcome the challenge of fake agro-inputs,” she said.

The National Oil Seeds Project continues to support local farmers by supplying high-quality inputs and linking them to value chains, with the overall goal of improving livelihoods and promoting agricultural development in Uganda.
