2025 Senior Three project to equip students with practical skills for community development

KAMPALA, March 10, 2025 The Uganda National Examinations Board [UNEB] has officially announced the 2025 project theme for Senior Three students under the New Lower Secondary Curriculum [NLSC], focusing on “Utilisation of Available Resources for Community Development”.

The theme aims to equip learners with practical skills in identifying and making use of local resources to improve their communities.

In a statement issued by UNEB, the theme is set to guide learners in developing integrated projects as part of the Competency-Based Curriculum [CBC]. The assessment will contribute to the final UCE certification at the end of the four-year secondary education cycle.

“As part of its mandate to assess learners under the New Lower Secondary Curriculum, UNEB issues a project theme to guide learners in developing projects for certification. The theme for 2025 is Utilization of Available Resources for Community Development,” read part of the statement signed by Jennifer Kalule-Musamba, UNEB Public Relations Officer.

According to the Assessment Framework for CBC, project work is assessed at school level and the achievement level is presented as a stand-alone component on the certificate. This component highlights the learner’s creativity and ability to solve real-life problems.

“Learners without scores for project work will NOT qualify for a certificate,” the statement emphasised.

The project requires learners to acquire project management skills through all four years of lower secondary education. Simple projects are undertaken in Senior One and Two, while an integrated project runs from Senior Three to the second term of Senior Four.

UNEB also provided a detailed Project Assessment Instrument to guide both teachers and learners. The instrument breaks down the project into two major competencies: Project Planning and Project Implementation.

Under project planning, learners are expected to identify community problems, develop project titles, set objectives, and create activity plans. Project implementation involves gathering resources, stakeholder engagement, and creating a product or service that aligns with the theme.

“We applaud the Directorate of Examinations for this timely and embracing theme,” Kalule-Musamba stated.

The project theme for 2024 was “Skills and Innovation for Sustainable Living”, showing UNEB’s continued commitment to promoting practical, problem-solving education.

With this year’s theme, learners are encouraged to explore how available resources can be harnessed to bring about positive transformation in their communities.
