2024 Martyrs’ Day celebrations: Bishop calls for spiritual capital as Christians prepare to trek to Namugongo

NEBBI, May 6, 2024 -The Archbishop-elect for Gulu Archdiocese, Raphael P’mony Wokorach has called on Christians in Uganda to exhibit the spiritual capital and power of faith as they prepare to embark on long journeys to Namugongo for this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

Wokorach said if Christians don’t have faith in the Uganda Martyrs, then the long-distance walk to Namugongo Martyrs Shrine in Wakiso district, which they are being prepared for, would be meaningless, further arguing that it is the faith that drives the walk.

He made his remarks at Nebbi Diocese Media Centre while receiving a donation of Shs 20 million, and 500 reflector jackets worth millions of shillings from MTN Uganda.

“If you have the faith in you, the distance is less but, for someone with less faith, has a challenge in covering the long distance because it is the faith which drives the walk not the body,” said Wokorach.

He advised that the journey of faith shouldn’t stop with Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebration but must be practised by by Christians in Uganda during their lifetime.

Nebbi Catholic Diocese was tasked to lead the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations in 2024, slated for June 3rd, with a required budget of Shs 1.3 billion.

This marks the second time Nebbi Diocese will lead the prayers in Namugongo, following their previous leadership in 2007.

The annual event pays homage to the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs, who were executed for their faith on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda Kingdom between 1885 and 1887.

He emphasised the significance of this year’s celebrations, coinciding with the Diamond Jubilee since the canonisation of the 22 Uganda Martyrs, Saints revered by the Catholic Church.

The Vice Chairperson for the celebration of Uganda Martyrs’ Day Rev, Fr Albert Oromchan said they have registered over 1,000 believers from West Nile who will be walking to Namugongo this year.

He said the Christians will be flagged off on May 15th, 2024 from Nebbi Diocese to Namugongo, and calls for helping hands to support the local  pilgrims with refreshments on their way to  Namungogo.

However, the Marketing Manager MTN, Mildred Nsinda said the telecom company would provide the pilgrims refreshments.
